Litigant A party to a lawsuit; one engaged in litigation. In loco parentis In the place of the parent"; refers to actions of a custodian, guardian or other person acting in the parent's place. No bill This phrase, endorsed by a grand jury on an indictment, means that, in the opinion of the jury, evidence was insufficient to warrant the return of a formal charge. Intestate The status of a person who dies without leaving a will. Probable cause A judicial finding that there exists reasonable grounds for belief that a person should be arrested or searched. Interlocutory appeal An appeal to an appellate court of a temporary or provisional order of a trial court. The appellate court is not required to hear the appeal Dissent A term commonly used to denote the disagreement of one or more judges of a court of appeals with the decision of the majorityA term commonly used to denote the disagreement of one or more judges of a court of appeals with the decision of the majority Appeal The bringing of a case to a higher court for review of a lower court's order or judgment.
